Old Growth Cedar Bowl #2

This is the other half of the first cedar bowl. (9" x 3 1/2"). It was finished with only the Beall Bowl Buffing System (tripoli->white diamond->carnauba wax). So the color is much lighter that the previous bowl, and the surface is a little smoother and very polished.

I eventually decided to oil this bowl with Walnut oil. (July 7, 2014) Quite different.

Japanese Maple Salt Cellars

Turned the same way as the Ash salt cellars. The log was mounted between centers (bark to bark), turned into a yoyo shape with tenons on each end, cut in half, etc, and finished with the Beall Bowl Buffing System.

Ash Salt Cellars

Salt Cellars from an Ash Log

The piece of log was mounted between centers, a tenon was cut on each end. After mounting in the 4 jaw scroll chuck the overall shape was turned; then the resulting "yoyo" was cut in half and each half mounted separately so the insides could be tuned away. These were finished using the Beall Bowl buffing system (tripoli->white diamond->carnauba wax).

Old Growth Cedar Bowl

The old growth cedar lumber (10" x 10" x 34") piece was a gift from Roger Heinen. A 10" cube was cut off one end and turned between centers. Two bowls were turned from that piece by turning tenons on each end and parting the partially turned bowls approximately 2/3 x 1/3 from the ends. This is the bigger bowl. ( 9 1/2" x 4 1/2" ). It was "wet" sanded with walnut oil + carnauba wax (from Doctor's Woodshop http://www.doctorswoodshop.com/) through all the grits out to 1200.

Gave this bowl to Luigi and Anna as a wedding present.

An ash bowl (2" x 6 1/2") was turned form a firewood log and polished using the Beall bowl buffing system. I gave this bowl to Terry Wuori, who gave me the firewood log.

Small Bowl from Black Locust

This bowl was turned from a locust 4 x 4 given to me about 40 years ago by my brother Reid.

The blank was cut from a 4 x 4 and trimmed to get rid of the pith:

Started between centers and turned a tenon and reverse mounted it to cut out the inside:

All done: and buffed using the Beall Bowl Buffing system starting with

red tripoli and white diamond compound and finishing with carnauba wax: a three step process using three 2" buffing wheels mounted on an extension that

fits the threads on the headstock.

Multiple views showing various "features" revealed while turning.

Lucite Shaving Brush

I had a short rod of Lucite (about 1.5 x 4 inches) kicking around and decided to see if it could be turned into a shaving brush. Lucite is very prone to catches and had to be turned in the scraping rather than the cutting mode. (I found that out by trial and error, and that is partly why the final diameter was somewhat smaller than the rod I started with 🙂 )

I had to cut some small pieces of wood to hold the rod in the 4 jaw chuck because its diameter was a little smaller than my smallest chuck setting.

The four pieces of wood became fused to the Lucite which had apparently partly melted from friction when I got one of the catches.

This shows the leftover piece of the rod after I had parted off the finished piece. The whole brush was as rough as the conical surface before sanding and polishing.

And this is what I ended up with after sanding through the grits (80-1500) and then polishing with a 3 part Lucite polishing compound while it was on the lathe. The bristles were glued in with CA gel (cyanoacrylate, super glue):

Lilac Candlestick

The lilac was a gift from John Kauer from a lilac bush that he had felled in his yard.

(I want more, John.)

Four views:  (8″ x 2.5″)(The middle two images are a stereo pair.)

Really nice white sap wood and nice spalting in the heart wood.

Cherry Bowl

This bowl was cut from a cherry plank about 24″ x 48″ x 4″ that was a gift from Dave and Betty Almstrom of Meredith NH.

After sanding through the grits (80 -> 1500), it was treated with four coats of Mahoney’s walnut oil and hand buffed.

Several views of the finished bowl: (6 3/4″ x 3 3/4″). The red color of the wood reminded

me of clay and so I left it thick to give it a “pottery” look and feel.

Birch Bowl

From the birch log that was a gift from Gilbert Rivera (see below) over a year ago. Finished with Mahoney’s Walnut Oil/Wax. (4″ x 9  3/4″)

Several cracks had developed and were filled with  West System epoxy and sawdust and CA glue. Sanded with Abranet non-clogging sanding sheets (P-80, 120, 180, 240, 320, 400, 600 grit) and finished off with a 3M microfine sanding pad/sponge before applying Mahoney’s Oil/Wax finish.
